If you have a one-of-a-kind product that\u2019s so in demand people will literally <a href=\"http:\/\/abc7news.com\/technology\/people-robot-wait-in-line-for-new-iphone-6s-in-palo-alto-\/1001082\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">send robots to wait in line<\/a> for it, then you don\u2019t really need to worry about anything we\u2019re saying. You\u2019re already doing great.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you sell anything other than Apple iPhones, you\u2019ll need to figure out how to sell your products on an ongoing basis. But that\u2019s not what we\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re talking about commerce subscriptions, which allow customers to order the same products on a regular schedule. Commerce subscriptions have a few benefits over trying to sell individual products one at a time:<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Subscriptions are extremely convenient, especially if you sell products people buy on the regular.&#8221;]<br \/>\nFirst, commerce subscriptions are extremely convenient for customers, especially if you sell products that people buy on the regular. You also have a fairly predictable source of monthly income, which is always nice.<\/p>\n<p>Subscriptions also work well to build brand loyalty, since customers are invested in your business on a continuous basis. All in all, if you can turn a product into a subscription, you should.<\/p>\n<h2>What sort of things can be turned into subscriptions?<\/h2>\n<p>Now you may be thinking, \u201cMy individual products don\u2019t really work with subscriptions!\u201d If that\u2019s the case, maybe come up with a new product or service that does, because seriously, subscriptions are pretty much the best source of revenue for your business.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t want to spend time and energy developing a new product (fine, fine, we get it), here are some ways you can approach subscriptions without reinventing the wheel.<\/p>\n<h3>Offer a membership<\/h3>\n<p>Again, think about companies like Dollar Shave Club or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/jessica-alba-honest-co-raises-70-million-at-a-nearly-1-billion-valuation-2014-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honest Company<\/a>, which are membership-based commerce sites that make millions of dollars each year selling stuff you can find for a dollar at your local drug store. How do they do it? The power of exclusivity. Even if you sell something so extremely basic that everyone already has two at home, including a yearly membership that offers additional discounts to members is a great way to add income as well as provide a service for loyal customers.<\/p>\n<h3>Offer discounts for frequently ordered items<\/h3>\n<p>If a customer in any way will return to your site to reorder, offering a way to do it that both saves them money and makes you more money is a win-win solution. Amazon does this with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/subscribe-and-save\/details\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Subscribe &amp; Save<\/a> service, which lets customers select items to subscribe to and then set their quantity and schedule for delivery.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4303\" src=\"https:\/\/saucal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/beauty_whykeeprunningout_bb._V390538485_.jpg?resize=789%2C334\" alt=\"beauty_whykeeprunningout_bb._V390538485_\" width=\"789\" height=\"334\" \/><br \/>\nSource: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/subscribe-and-save\/details\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Box single items together<\/h3>\n<p>If you have individual items that you\u2019re always trying to cross-promote, consider boxing them together and selling them as a subscription product. Think about companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justfab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JustFab<\/a> (valued at $109M) or <a href=\"https:\/\/barkbox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BarkBox<\/a> ($1.7M), which are made up solely of these box subscriptions. Even if your customers don\u2019t like all of the products in the box, they\u2019ll still buy the box because it\u2019s a deal, and everybody loves a good deal.<\/p>\n<h3>Turn a service into a subscription<\/h3>\n<p>Or, if you\u2019re a SaaS company and don\u2019t deal with products, your company is ready-made for subscriptions. Think of companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dropbox<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salesforce<\/a>, which are built around subscriptions for using their services (and also are worth billions, just FYI). If customers can in any way benefit from things that you offer, and you can charge those people on a regular basis for it, don\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n<h2>Making subscriptions run smoothly in WooCommerce<\/h2>\n<p>So once you\u2019ve (wisely) decided to make the move to subscriptions, let\u2019s talk about the nitty-gritty of what you need to know to make them run smoothly in your WooCommerce site.<\/p>\n<h3>Setting up subscriptions (if you\u2019re not really a developer, but are still in charge of the store)<\/h3>\n<p>The things you\u2019ll need to know about when it comes to commerce subscriptions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating your subscription products<\/li>\n<li>Creating discounts association with subscriptions<\/li>\n<li>Integrating payment gateways with subscription products<\/li>\n<li>Setting up shipping and billing periods<\/li>\n<li>Creating subscription account pages<\/li>\n<li>Inputting subscription shortcodes<\/li>\n<li>Setting up subscription emails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sound like a lot? Okay, it might be. BUT that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not worth it. Much of the documentation for these processes is <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.woothemes.com\/document\/subscriptions\/store-manager-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already developed<\/a>, and once the processes are set up they essentially run themselves.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4302\" src=\"https:\/\/saucal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/07\/add-subscription-product.png?resize=920%2C355\" alt=\"add-subscription-product\" width=\"920\" height=\"355\" \/><br \/>\nSource: <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.woothemes.com\/document\/subscriptions\/store-manager-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WooThemes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or you could, you know, <a href=\"https:\/\/saucal.com\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ask the experts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Setting up subscriptions (if you\u2019re a developer)<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, if you are a developer and you\u2019ve been saddled with the task of building on subscriptions to your WooCommerce site because your boss read this article and thought it was a nifty idea (we\u2019re sorry), then here is what you need to know. Again, the documentation for this is <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.woothemes.com\/document\/subscriptions\/develop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already available<\/a>, so you can follow it step by step.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Get the <a href=\"https:\/\/woocommerce.com\/products\/woocommerce-subscriptions\/?aff=2871\">WooCommerce Subscription\u00a0plugin<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose a payment gateway.<\/strong> This is probably a no-brainer, as you\u2019ll most likely use whatever payment gateway you already have set up for the rest of your products. But some gateway APIs don\u2019t always support recurring billing, so double check that your gateway is capable of it. Stripe is easiest out of the box, or just use PayPal, maybe? (If using PayPal, make sure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.woothemes.com\/document\/subscriptions\/faq\/paypal-reference-transactions\/.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reference Transactions<\/a> are enabled.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use filters to register gateway support.<\/strong> This is done by setting the \u2018supports\u2019 property of your gateway. More information can be found here (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.woothemes.com\/document\/subscriptions\/develop\/payment-gateway-integration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Step 1<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set up recurring payments, fees, and billing periods.<\/strong> Basically, all the stuff in the previous bullet points. All of this can be done through the API. More information can be found here (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.woothemes.com\/document\/subscriptions\/develop\/payment-gateway-integration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Step 2<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manage ongoing subscriptions.<\/strong> Subscription status will change over time as people renew, cancel, subscribe to new services, or change their subscription periods. You\u2019ll probably want to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.woocommerce.com\/document\/subscriptions\/develop\/payment-gateway-integration\/?aff=2871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WooCommerce Payment Gateway API<\/a> in addition to the Subscriptions API to help manage these changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sound reasonable? Don\u2019t worry, once everything is set up, the API takes over and manages a lot of things automatically. You\u2019ll still need to make changes and deal with any one-off issues that arise, but overall, it\u2019s not as complicated as it seems.<\/p>\n<p>Again, the overall process to setting up WooCommerce subscriptions is fairly well documented, so whether you\u2019re a newbie developer or a code expert you\u2019ll be able to navigate making the changes.
